Puyo Pop Review

Puzzle games are hard to come by and they are sometimes unoriginal. I was amazed to see such a great game as Puyo Pop for the GBA. The phrase ’easy to learn, hard to master’ can defiantly be used in this case.

The visuals for Puyo Pop are great for the GBA. The visuals are Japanese-based, which gives an anime type feel to the on-screen characters. The colors used for the puzzle pieces are bright and easy to distinguish. The voice bubbles are big with large print, so there isn’t a hard to read word there.

The sound of the characters cheering as a combo is entered and the puyo popping are the staple sound effects in the game. The background music is slightly fast, but this is a puzzle game, the music is supposed to make you feel rushed.

The gameplay is like ‘Dr. Robotinik’s Mean Bean Machine’ for Sega Genesis (if you have ever heard of it, its old) or ‘Techmo Stackers’ for Playstation. You have to stack four of the same colored blob-like creatures called puyo on a Tetris screen. Once you have the four same colored puyo touch, they disappear, and the puyo on top fall down, giving you a chance to create a combo. Create a combo and junk will fall on your opponent’s screen. If you get a full screen of puyo, game over. There are 5 levels, which you can play over and over, cards which you can earn in the game that describe different characters, and a challenge mode in which you must create combos of puyo.

The game is highly addictive and a good game to pass the time by. I recommend it to any fan of puzzle games, and anyone who thinks it’ll be fun.
