Enter the Matrix Review

News had been leaked that that the Wachowski brothers had teamed up with Shiny Entertainment to produce games based on The Matrix. However things have been kept extremely quiet since then.

Now The Matrix Reloaded has hit cinemas, the promise that the we would get the game the same weekend as the movie release was true and now we get to review it yippee!

The game starts with the task of retrieving a disc, this disc has vital information stored on it and it is up to you to retrieve it. There is three difficulty levels for you to choose from and although not much different opting for the easier setting will see that you regain your health faster.

As the title may suggest the game does not follow the same story as Reloaded but will seem familiar. You have a choice between Niobe and Ghost. Ghost has the better weapons and Niobe is a little better in combat (flying of walls etc.)

The main buttons you will use are the Y, X and A buttons these deal with dispatching your enemies and the Z button will come in handy navigating through the warehouses, buildings and alleyways.

There are plenty of guns on offer during the game and you will never be short of ammo nearly every enemy has a weapon and when you kill them they will kindly leave it behind for you. Secondary weapons are things like grenades and even bigger grenades these can be clumsy to work with and they have a mind of their own - throw them at your enemy and they may just bounce back at you. (not a good thing believe me)

This is a very important feature in the game, it slows down time and allows you to have more strength and quickness in the height of battle. However it only lasts a little while and you will have to recharge it from time to time. It is charged when you kill enemies and helps you dodge bullets and any other items the matrix can throw at you!

As you may have guessed the game is packed full of agents who multiply at will. As you can imagine this can be a challenging game at times - fun though in a annoying kind of way.

This is a brilliant part of the game in fact this offers a truly brilliant replay kind of “addiction”, after the game is finished or at any time through the game you can power this up and hack away at a dos like mainframe. Success will grant you cheat codes and other interesting features. I hope other games will adopt this kind of idea and use it in up coming games.

Visuals are brilliant at times and less so at others. Some areas show that Shiny have gone to great lengths to use as much of the power the cube has to offer and use it to the games advantage. However some areas are dull, boring and glitchy. Don’t be taken by the impression that this game is a visual masterpiece as some screenshots convey as it’s not. However it’s far from bad though and throughout the game you will be amazed at some of the rooms for example with the marble floors and stunning decor.

You will notice some of the tunes from the film The Matrix Reloaded and some that are totally unique to the game. The speaking is average and that’s about it really.

The fighting in the game is the highlight of the game for me. Some visuals are nice some are bad, some of the music is nice some are not - Get what I mean? The game is very good and is worth playing. Does it live up to the hype though? Not really…

Overall: 6.5
