Donkey Kong Racing Preview

Rare is currently working on a game featuring all of it’s hit franchise characters (and there are alot), which is called Donkey Kong Racing.
The graphics are great, but nothing was shown in real time on Gamecube’s software. The pre-rendered demos were on hand to give people a look at the graphical style of the game, and to provide details on what we might expect when we play it. The demo used a wide variety of textures to enhance the graphics, and those will no doubt make their way into the game.
The setting takes place in many of Rare’s previous jungle settings, making for a fun, vibrant experience. You can also take control of the surrounding animals in that area; you can ride an ostrich, piranha, or rhino depending on what world you’re in. The funny thing is you won’t be in any racing karts. You hitch up in your animal of choice, playing as one of the Kongs. During racing, you can pick up various items to increase your beast’s size, speed, etc., which gives you the edge over your fellow racers.
The racing isn’t set to a course, either. Say you start off on a flat land riding on an ostrich. You are then forced to take an alternate route or traverse through different terrain. You would have to switch animals during the race, or else you would lose. This adds a whole new experience to the race, and it can make all the difference between winning and losing.
What Rare is attempting to with DKR is great. They are not restricting the gamplay to the well worn track, which is what so many racing games accomplish. Rare is set to offer a fresh, new gaming experience that is sure to please everyone.
