NHL Hitz 2002 Preview
Midway wants to create a hockey game that brings out the brutality in all of us on the rink. This game is all about the pure adrenaline of hockey, and after playing it, you’ll never want to step into a rink again.
The focal point of Hitz is basically like NBA Jam. You can perform a series of illegal hits and maneuvers and not get called for it; in fact, it is an integral part of the gameplay. If you’re player scores enough goals, he becomes unstoppable or “on fire.” You will also have the ability to check people over the boards; the smashing of the glass is included The crowd interaction is also a plus. They will bang the glass, cheer, and even walk out if they are mad or if their isn’t enough blood on the ice. This is certainly a change from the paper-thin crowd that we’re so used to seeing, as this crowd is in full 3D.
This is a benchmark in gaming sports history, and hopefully we can see this feature being implemented across all future sports games.
The other amazing thing about this game is the amount of detail. Watch the ice gradually wear down as you skate it, or watch your favorite player change facial expressions to react to a bad call. There is also a ton of hidden features to unlock, including custom players and 32 extra fantasy rinks. Of course, everything is fully licensed, from the players to the teams and rinks. There are also full physic models, including the net. You can actually see where the puck hits the metal and leaves dents, or watch the net sway if you hit it too many times.
This game is for the true hockey freak who wants to have a rip roaring bashing good time with 7 other mates. The goal isn’t to have a competitive Gran Turismo environment, but rather to enjoy the brutal side of hockey and all it’s goriness. Expect this title to launch with the GameCube, but until then stay tuned for more info.
