Sonic's Spin [Edition 1]
Hey, welcome to the newly established “Sonic’s Spin” series, exclusive to the website you are viewing with your own eyes at this very moment, Gamequbed.com. I, Sonic, will take some valuable time out of my daily gaming life for a spin on what’s happening in the world of gaming.
Nintendo’s Megaton Announcement
The first topic I’m discussing is Nintendo’s big announcement, more commonly known as the Megaton Announcement. They are planning to release this information in early December if my knowledge stands correct. There are a few possibilities:
- A new online plan
- Brand new games, most likely HUGE titles
- Purchasing a new company to become second-party
Most likely there are more, but those listed are the bigger possibilities. Whatever it may be, it will definitely be something to skyrocket hardware and software sales if all goes well.
A new online plan would bring in some cash, because many people like the idea of the internet on gaming consoles. It’s not known whether any console’s internet gaming capabilties are a success. I haven’t bought PSO or a Broadband Modem as of yet, and I don’t plan to until Nintendo decides to release some quality online games. Mario Kart, anyone?
The idea of new games would be a huge success in the market. This possibility seems to be vanished away because of Nintendo’s new advertisement, in which it says “180 games, without a rush.” That means by Christmas folks. If you think about it, there is not much left to announce.
The announcement of a new second-party company would be marvelous. Rumors have been a’brewin with Capcom and Sega, and with the recent loss of Rare Ltd., a great game publisher, this seems even more imminent. Sega seems to have their best sales on the GameCube, with XBOX sales struggling, and PS2 sales doing fairly well. Sega would make a great second-party company, and would bring a large userbase to the GameCube and Game Boy Advance. Capcom, already having given their entire Resident Evil series, would be another strong contender. They have just announced 5 EXCLUSIVE GameCube games, and they all look fantastic with some wiping away that “kiddy” image the GCN receives from critics and XBOX fanboys alike.
The Megaton will most likely be a MAJOR announcement that no one has thought of yet. I’m on pins and needles.
GameCube DVD
On to number two, the GameCube DVD. Nintendo will be releasing it free to most retail chains, and will include it with all December Nintendo Power issues. It features Metroid Prime, Star Fox Adventures, Super Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing, Mario Party 4, many of Electronic Arts’s titles, and more. Don’t forget the GBA coverage of Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, the e-Reader, and Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3. I am a proud subscriber of Nintendo Power, and I will be receiving the DVD. You can bet I will give you the scoop. It’s not a playable demo disc, but it’s advertising nonetheless.
Game Boy Player
The Game Boy Player attachment was announced just last week, and it seems like it will be a success. The Game Boy Player lets you play your Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy games on the TV through the GameCube. It hooks onto the bottom and should fit like a glove. But, as Matt stated in his new editorial, will there be new online capabilties with this? I’ve always wanted to challenge someone from far away on the GBA. Since there is no sign of modem capabilities for the Game Boy Advance itself this seems like the most reasonable solution. Can you say online four swords?!? That’s what I thought.
The Game Boy Player attachment will be available next summer with a price tag at aroud $50.
Cell Phone Game Boys
One more topic. Those new cell phone gaming machines. I have one sentence: What are they thinking? Even though the Nokia phone/gaming console has Sega as a developer, I don’t think we’ll be seeing good sales for the newcomers. Most kids that have Game Boys don’t even have a cell phone! Stick with the original people, that’s all I have to say. Nothing will ever compare to the power of Nintendo. Bowser laugh. Ahem.
