Resident Evil Review
Movies based on video games have been criticized many times. And I agree that there hasn’t been a good movie based on a videogame yet. Producers have made many attempts to lift this curse, but it seems that video games and movies just don’t mix. Some attempts include Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, and many more including a movie with a sick looking Mario and Luigi. What’s next? Well the new batch includes the Resident Evil Series. A scary game indeed but can it compare with other horror movies?
The first thing I look for in a movie is a good story line. And I’m surprised to say that Resident Evil delivers. The story flows smoothly and you learn something new along the way. For someone who hasn’t played any of the games, it is vital that I know what’s going on. The first 20 minutes are confusing, but slowly all your questions are answered. The best way to describe this is that the producers made a good time line. Resident Evil is more than just a horror movie. You can’t just have Zombies come out and kill someone and then everyone lives happily ever after. You need to give a lot of credit to the writers for giving the movie depth.
The next important factor for a good horror movie is well, music that makes you pee in your pants and jump out of your seat. When I went to see the movie with my friend, we were talking during the movie and then BAM! And we jumped out of our seats. The spine tingling sounds usually lead up to important events. The music gets higher and higher until you can’t wait to see what’s behind that door…but wait; it was just a false alarm. You also hear moans and groans of zombies and the surroundings become familiar as you listen to familiar sounds.
In the 21st century, as computer animation gets more and more popular, we rely on computers to make movies realistic and as real as we can imagine. Well imagine you must escape from a city a mile under ground filled with brain eating zombies. For a futuristic world, the special effects were done well in our time. There are lasers, supersonic trains, computers that monitor your every move, and of course, the zombies and killer dogs. You know it’s not real when a man gets cut up into lots of pieces by lasers, but that’s what makes it fun. Costume design was also good, just as the backgrounds and the settings of the game were fully detailed.
In conclusion, Resident Evil is a great movie to see. Fans of the game won’t be disappointed, but will also find something new.
