GC Launch (preview)

By now everyone should know that the Gamecube has launched in Japan (way back, actually), and that it is doing quite well over there. Now the crucial launch for Nintendo is in North America, when it and the XBox go head to head with launches a mere three days apart.

I’m betting that the Gamecube launch will be a prosperous one. They have killer apps, a recognized name, and, more importantly, a substantial amount of units available at launch.

The games. Everyone knows that Nintendo is the best developer in the world, and with an all-star lineup of exclusive titles such as Luigi’s Mansion and Wave Race, they are sure not to disappoint, and are a hard dish to pass up. The 100$ less price tag also makes it a convenient choice for many parents who might also be looking for a ‘cube for Christmas, and it doesn’t take a heavy toll on our bank accounts. Also, don’t forget the other games that will help fuel the Gamecube, such as Madden NFL 2001, NHL Hitz, and a whole other cast of titles after the launch. Nintendo has learned alot from the mistakes of the N64, so expect a steady stream of games and units arriving at your local store.

The name. Although Nintendo’s 1 million marketing budget is meager to Microsoft’s 500 million, many of us are already familiar with the Nintendo and its games. After all, they’ve been in the gaming biz for over a decade now, and are still more widely recognized in gaming than XBox or PS2. Basically, they define video games.

The systems. Nintendo expects to have 700,000 units available at launch, while XBox is around 300 000, although I don’t know for sure. Nintendo is going to meet the demand, and people will be thankful for it! This will eliminate clutter and mess usually found on launch days.

All in all, I expect Nintendo’s launch to be a prosperous one. This was merely a small analysis of what Nintendo has going for themselves. Join me after the launch when I review (preview=review: get it? haha) the launch and how successful Nintendo was. Until then, save those pennies and be prepared to muscle your way for a ‘cube come November 18.
