Console Comparisons

If you’ve been reading this site in the past you may have read the article I wrote on comparing the next generation controllers. This time around, I’m talking a look at the consoles. First of all, I must say all three consoles are great and if you’re a video game fan that can’t decide which console to buy then this will help you. I must also mention that I happen to own all three consoles and have had extensive playing time on each one. I don’t plan to rate each system, just compare the cold, hard facts. These opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Gamequbed.

PlayStation 2

The PS2 is a great console, but its not as powerful as the other two because it was released a year earlier. This doesn’t mean that it’s not powerful, but just slightly less then the Xbox or GameCube, which is really apparant in some of the games that you play. Its got great 3rd party support and many top notch games.

Pros

  • Excellent 3rd party support
  • A huge library of good games
  • Decent controller
  • DVD player (sure its a good extra but I buy a video game system for games)
  • Has network support and an external harddrive
  • Excellent userbase

Cons

  • Has only two controller ports, but you can buy multi-tap for more people
  • Lagging in power compared to Gamecube and XBox
  • Same price range as Gamecube

Xbox

The XBox is by far the most powerful of all the next generation consoles, and has the most features to date. It has some great games such as Halo, Genma Onimusha, and Bloodwake. A good feature that is built right into the XBox is the hard drive, so that you don’t need memory cards [to play on your home system], and can save right to the system itself. Xbox also has a feature to save songs to the hard drive and play them in your games, but this feature isn’t often used as it should be. You can burn songs as well.

Pros

  • Excellent Specifications
  • Hard Drive is Built Right in!
  • DVD player (optional)
  • Great games to choose from
  • Online connection (if you’re interested), and network support
  • 4 controller ports
  • Microsoft is Backing It

Cons

  • Gigantic Size, which means it’s Tough to Store
  • Adult sized controller
  • Controllers are expensive (compared to PS2 and GCN)
  • Tough Price to Afford

GameCube

This may not be the most powerful system but it was made by Nintendo and they have been in the ‘biz for over 20 years, so hopefully they know what they are doing! The GameCube may not have all these extra features, but again I say we are comparing GAME systems here. The games on this system are absolutely fun for any age and have good last ability (SSB anyone?) The Gamcube’s price also makes it affordable for people of any ages.

Pros

  • Small and Compact
  • Best controller of any system to date
  • Great Games
  • Piracy is Tough since it uses minidiscs
  • More powerful than the PS2, but not XBox
  • Future Add-Ons
  • 100 dollars cheaper then PS2/Xbox

Cons

  • Bad Kid Reputation
  • No DVD Player
  • Unknown plans for Internet Support, and no Network Capabilities
  • No Harddrive
