This Holiday Season

People, prepare for the biggest video game war in history. Only three out of four systems will have a place in the next generation system, and we get set to experience the ultimate choice between life and death of a console…the Holiday Season.

With this editorial, I plan to discuss the pros and cons of each system, as well as it’s current standing in the video game market.

Nintendo 64

As shown from our previous poll, the Nintendo 64 may very well be on death row. With the lackluster 3-rd party support, and developers turning to the PS and PS2, Nintendo is going to make a last stand with the release of Majora’s Mask and TWINE, and hopefully, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 can make a direct port to the N64.

And with the release of PS2, and the next generation of Dreamcast games looming on the horizon, us loyal Nintendo fans will have to wait it out May 2001 for E3, when more Nintendo Gamecube information is released, and then in October, when Nintendo’s next generation system Gamecube will be released.

In the meanwhile, expect Nintendo to make a decent showing This Holiday Season with the likes of Majora’s Mask and TWINE, while we wait for our Gamecube..

Sony PlayStation 2

Sony will doubt steal some of the thunder from Sega DreamCast, and with their release of PS2, plus their 27 launch games; some of which are very good, Sony is riding on a wave of momentum that it created. Sony still has a much larger user base than Sega or Nintendo, with 75 million units sold worldwide. Sony is going to capitalize on that success, and until we see what Microsoft and Nintendo have to offer, Sony will be the only game in town until October 2001. And with the phenomenal support coming from 3rd parties, will be seeing more and more of what PS2 can and can’t do with the most powerful gaming system to date.

So This Holiday Season, expect PS2 to rule. It’s as simple as that.

Sega DreamCast

Hmm, it’s tough to say what is going to become of Sega. With their official launch of SegaNet, Sega loyalists finally got a chance to play over the Internet with NFL 2K. The user feedback is amazing, and many people are praising the first company to take this idea and make it work. Pats on the back to Sega for offering the first online service! Sega will also be releasing their 3rd generation of games, which are sure to make a good contender to PS2.

When North America is snowed in This Holiday Season, gamers will be warming up next to their DreamCast, playing Madden 2001 on SegaNet.
